Welcome to the Enlighten Holistic Medicine new patient center!
We understand that arriving at an acupuncturist office for the first time can be nerve racking. What will the experience be like? What is the facility like?
Enlighten Holistic Medicine is conveniently located in the Edgebrook Medical Office in the heart of the Edgebrook community, across from the Edgebrook library, at 5330 W Devon Ave, Suite 5, Chicago, IL 60646. It is on the second floor of the building. During standard business hours, a receptionist is there to greet you. If coming on a weekend or evening, you may use the buzzer system to access the Suite: #105. There is an elevator available for those with limited mobility.
Metered parking is available on Devon. There are a handful of free two hour parking slots on the west end of the building, though they fill up fast. On Sunday parking is free on Devon or in the lot between the Edgebrook Medical Building and Moher's pub.
If this is your first visit at Enlighten Holistic Medicine please arrive 10 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork. There is a lobby you may wait in until your appointment time is ready. Inside Enlighten Holistic Medicine's suite, there is a small foyer with a couch that a significant other or children may use while waiting for you to finish your appointment.
What can I expect during a treatment?
Your first treatment will be 90 minutes in order to allow enough time fully discuss your current health situation and review the health questionnaire, and answer any questions you may have. After a thorough assessment and a discussion of the goals of treatment, along with a brief explanation of the goals in terms of Chinese medicine, treatment begins. Treatment may include acupuncture, moxibustion (an herb that is lit near the body to warm and heal that part of the body), cupping, gua sha (using a tool to break up old, tense tissue in the body), herbal recommendations, lifestyle recommendations, and energy work. All procedures will be fully explained before performing them, and any procedure may be declined by you at any time.
It is best to wear loose, comfortable clothing if possible (although gowns are available if necessary). It is strongly recommended to eat a small meal with light protein about one to two hours before treatment. Treatment consists of an initial intake, discussion of symtoms, treatment with needles retained 15-30 minutes, and a follow-up discussion of further recommendations and at-home practices to continue the maintaining the benefits of the treatment on your own.
When acupuncture is performed, you may feel a slight twinge as the needle enters, and may feel a vague heavy or achy sensation at the location of the needle. Needles are thinner than a human hair and many of them you will not feel at all. Once all the needles you generally feel no pain, and you may drift off to sleep. Needles are retained anywhere from 15 – 30 minutes, depending on the nature of the disorder and your overall health. Some patients feel energized after a treatment while others feel a little groggy, so please keep this is mind when scheduling – you may want to allow yourself a little time afterwards to relax in our waiting room before rushing back into your day.
It is important to know that the success of any treatment plan is partially dependent on the patient's willingness to heal. Motivated patients that are committed to healing and making lifestyle changes usually discover great success.
